University of Waterloo

Established in 1957, the University of Waterloo is consistently ranked as Canada's most innovative university. The university is home to the largest engineering and mathematics programs in Canada, as well as research centres that include the world-renowned Institute for Quantum Computing and the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology.

Despite being one of Canada's youngest universities, the University of Waterloo is recognized as one of the top universities in the world for engineering, computer science, and mathematics. Kitchener-Waterloo

The University of Waterloo is located in the City of Waterloo, which has geographically merged with neighboring Kitchener into a single metropolitan area called Kitchener-Waterloo (K-W) with a population of approximately 500,000. Kitchner-Waterloo's economy is historically-tied to manufacturing. Today, however, it is Canada's high tech centre, and the headquarters of Google Canada, Blackberry, and OpenText, among others. Many of these companies originated as start-ups from the University of Waterloo. It is also home to the Perimiter Institute for Theoretical Physics and several other distinguished research institutes.

Surrounding area

eloraWhile K-W is the centre of Canada's high-tech industry, the surrounding countryside is pastoral, and reflects the region's agricultural and industrial origins. It features beautiful farms, rolling hills, communities of old-order Mennonites, and remnants of the mid-19th century milling and textile industries in towns like St. Jacobs, Elora and Fergus.


niagara fallsFurther afield, Toronto, Canada's largest city, Niagara Falls and the Niagara Peninsula, famous for its vineyards, and Stratford, renowned for its theatre festival (April-November), are all within a 90-minute drive from K-W. 2017 also marks the 150th anniversary of Canada, so there will be many special festivities highlighting the history and culture of our country.
